Uttarakhand floods: 3 dead after helicopter used for relief aid crashes in Uttarkashi

A helicopter of a private agency, engaged in rescue operations for cloudburst affected areas of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, crashed soon after taking off in Molda village of Arakot area Wednesday. Three people including the pilot have been killed, an SDRF official confirmed.

As many as 15 persons were reportedly killed due to cloudburst incident in Uttarkashi district on Sunday. The state government had engaged four helicopters of civil aviation and Indian Air Force in the relief and rescue operations.

At least 10 helipads were developed at different places in the affected areas for the emergency landing of helicopters. Arakot was the base camp for relief and rescue operations.

Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat had inspected the affected areas on Tuesday. According to the government, 51 villages and an area of 70 square-km has been affected by this natural calamity.

The government says that losses due to the disaster in Uttarkashi are pegged at approximately Rs 130 crore. Around 300 personnel have been deployed in the relief and rescue operations.
