Since independence, female staff had to commit to bulky, oversized body protectors designed for men. About 300 women from CRPF staff stationed in Srinagar to monitor rockfall incidents will benefit from these changes, a CRPF official said.

The full body protector has been designed by a team of scientists from the Institute of Defense of Physiology and Allied Sciences , a unit of the Defense Research and Development Organization.

Dr. Bhuvnesh Kumar, Director of DIPAS said: "The equipment covers all the soft parts of the human body, such as the rib cage, the back of the arm, the internal calf, the thigh area and the groin of the females deployed in the control of disturbances "

Scientist Shweta Rawat, who led the design team, said that anthropometric data were used to design the gears that guarantee the protection of women's vital organs.

"The equipment is anti-stab, anti-acid, the prototype has been tested and soon we will go to mass production, it will increase the efficiency of the women, since the protectors that were used before were designed for men and lacked the facility of operation, "said Anupam Kulshreshtha, IG, CRPF.

Ms. Kulshreshtha added that the idea of ??gender-specific protection teams was first discussed at the National Conference on Women in 2016.

"It will be available in all sizes and the material used is the same as that used in male body protectors. It will ensure better mobility. It has also paved the way for further research and development in the field of body armor and body vests specific to women, "said Moses Dhinakaran, DIG and spokesperson, CRPF.

Another official said that once the mass production begins, the equipment will be available to other forces of the central armed police and also to the state police. It will weigh around 6 kg.
