Journalist Ravish Kumar among the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay winners

Indian journalist Ravish Kumar received the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award for "mobilizing journalism to give voice to the voiceless".

He is one of five people who have been declared winners of the award. Other winners of this award, nicknamed "The First Prize and the Highest Honor in Asia", include My Swan Win, Myanmar, also a journalist; Thailand's Angkhana Neelapajit, a human rights activist; In the Philippines, Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab, musician; and Kim Jong-Ki, from South Korea, an activist who deals with violence and mental health issues among young people.

Kumar, 44, who is the editor-in-chief of NDTV India, is one of India's most influential TV journalists, the quote quoted. Kumar's "Prime Time" program "deals with the real and under-reported problems of ordinary citizens," he added.


"If you have become the voice of the people, you are a journalist," the quote added.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Manila on September 9, 2019.

Established in 1957, the Ramon Magsaysay Award is Asia's highest award.
