Former union minister P Chidambaram was granted no immediate relief by the Supreme Court this morning after he asked for an urgent hearing on his petition against the rejection of anticipatory bail in the INX Media case. "It is a monumental magnitude of money laundering case," the CBI told the top court, which forwarded his petition to the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. In his petition, Mr Chidambaram had told the Supreme Court to take up his case for interim relief urgently, arguing that his antecedents are impeccable and there was no possibility of him "fleeing from justice". Requesting more time to appear before the CBI, Mr Chidambaram asked for interim relief "or else he would suffer irreparable loss".

In the morning, the CBI team of six officials has once again paid a visit to P Chidambaram's residence in South Delhi's Jor Bagh after various teams of Enforcement Directorate tried to locate him overnight but were unable to find him anywhere. The CBI on Tuesday posted a notice outside Mr Chidambaram's house, ordering him to appear before it "within two hours". The Delhi High Court on Tuesday rejected senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's petition for anticipatory bail in the INX Media case. The court's action has opened up the possibility of his arrest in the case. Rejecting his bail request, the judge said," Facts of the case prima facie reveal that the petitioner is the kingpin, that is, the key conspirator in this case". The agencies probing the case - the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate- visited the senior Congress leader's South Delhi home this evening but left soon as he was not in. Mr Chidambaram has denied any wrongdoing.

What is INX Media case?
Mr Chidambaram faces arrest in what is dubbed the "INX Media case", in which he is accused of facilitating foreign investment in a media company as Finance Minister in the Congress-led UPA government in 2007, at the instance of his son Karti, who allegedly received kickbacks for his role.

Congress tweeted in support of P Chidambaram, calling him an extremely qualified & respected leader, he has served this nation with dedication & humility. We stand by his quest for truth no matter what.

After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued a look-out notice against P Chidambaram, who hasn't been available at his residence when the CBI and Enforcement Directorate visited him, Sanjay Nirupam has accused the government of treating a senior politician like a thief. "Look out notice for P. Chidambaram ? It sounds a bit too much. Country's scholarly politician, former Home minister and Finance minister being treated like a thief".
