NASA engineers recently installed the legs and wheels, known as the mobility suspension in the Mars 2020 rover, according to a latest release from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

More than a dozen engineers with "bunny suits" integrated the rover's legs and wheels on June 13 in the clean room of the JPL spacecraft assembly plant, marking another milestone in the rover's building, the report said.

In addition to the complexity of the engineering team's integration effort, there is the "rocker-bogie" suspension system, which keeps the body of the rover balanced, allowing it to "swing" up or down, depending on the different positions of the six wheels, according to JPL.

The current tires, which measure 52.5 centimeters in diameter and are machined with studs or tricots that provide traction, are engineering models that will be replaced with flight models next year, JPL said.

Mars 2020 will be launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida in July 2020. It is scheduled to land in the Jezero crater on February 18, 2021.
