Pakistan: Train collision 11 killed, 60 injured

On Thursday, a high-speed passenger train struck a freight train in Punjab province in eastern Pakistan, killing at least 11 people and injuring 60 others, the press reported.

The Akbar Express, bound for Quetta, collided with a stationary freight train at Walhar Station in Sadiqabad Tehsil, Punjab province, Radio Pakistan reported.

The freight train was standing on the loop line when the high-speed passenger train, instead of driving on the main line, took the wrong route.

Rahim Yar Khan, District Police Officer (UDP), reported on the death of one woman and eight men, while nine wounded and nine women and 11 children were among the wounded.

At least 11 people were killed and 60 injured when the speeding Akbar Express collided with the stationery train, the Dunya News reported.

The engine of the Akbar Express was completely destroyed in the accident, while three bogies were also damaged, the police said.

The injured were transferred to nearby hospitals in Sadiqabad and Rahim Yar Khan for treatment when an emergency was declared, Geo News reported.

A child and a man were saved from the train, says the report.

The DPO added that rescue operations were in progress and that hydraulic cutters had been called to the site to recover the bodies, he added.

Officials say they fear more victims in the accident.
