Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty became Sunday the first Indian duo to win a BWF Super 500 badminton tournament with a hard-fought win over Chinese Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen at the Thailand Open. The unrated Indian duo defeated 21-19 18-21 21-18 against the third seeded Chinese, after fighting very hard for an hour and two minutes.

This was the first final of the 2019 season for Rankireddy and Shetty, the men's doubles silver medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Rankireddy and Shetty made a good start as they broke off 3-3 early and headed for a 10-6 lead, but their Chinese opponents continued to breathe through their necks and score 14-14.

It was a hotly contested affair after that and the world number 16 Indian couple could only take a slight advantage at ages 20-18. Although the Chinese duo reduced the gap to 19-20, the Indians managed to win the crucial point to conclude the first match.

In the second game, the Indians managed to take the lead by taking a 6-2 lead, but the Chinese quickly filled the gap at 5-6 before catching up at 11-11. After the interval, the Chinese duo progressed to 13-11, but the Indians improved their game and set the parity at 13 each.

The Indians then doubled their opponents to 16-14 and climbed to 18-16 before the Chinese won five straight points to knock out the Indians and win the match.

Rankireddy and Shetty were slow in the third game but managed to make it 6-6. From there, the Indians never turned forward and kept their cool to maintain the advantage over their rivals to the end.

Although the Chinese fought and narrowed the gap to 18-19, the Indians did not seem in a mood to come down and pocketed two consecutive points to seal the game in their favor.
