Akshay Kumar’s big Independence Day release, Mission Mangal, is turning out to be a phenomenal box-office affair. After witnessing a gigantic start on Thursday with collection of Rs 29.16 crore, the film witnessed a routine decline on its second day as it earned Rs 17.28 crore. The drop in business vis-à-vis Thursday is over 40 per cent. Its total collection now stands at Rs 46.44 crore.

Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh, in a Saturday tweet, noted that the multiplexes were driving the business of Mission Mangal. Without speaking of the decline, Mr Adarsh hinted that it was because of Friday being a “working day” that came after a “big holiday.”

His tweet read, “#MissionMangal is unstoppable on Day 2 [working day after a big holiday]... Multiplexes are terrific, driving its biz... Day 3 and 4 will be massive again... Eyes ₹ 85 cr+ total in *extended* weekend... Thu 29.16 cr, Fri 17.28 cr. Total: ₹ 46.44 cr. India biz.”

Mission Mangal, directed by Jagan Shakti, is a fictionalized account of India’s mission to Mars, which is known to be one of the cheapest interplanetary expeditions. The film also stars Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari, Sonakshi Sinha and Sharman Joshi in important roles, among others.

Mission Mangal locked horns with John Abraham’s Batla House at the box office. The latter gave the former a tough competition and went on to collect Rs 14.59 crore on its opening day. It is worth mentioning that both the films have received mixed reviews from critics across the country. The word of mouth, on the other side, seems to be in the favour of both.
