After the complaint of Allahabad University vice-chancellor Sangita Srivastava. Inspector General of Police, Prayagraj has asked the district magistrates (DMs) and senior superintendents of police (SSPs) in his range to ensure a ban on use of loudspeakers between 10 pm and 6 am.

The IG wrote a letter to the DMs and SSP of four districts falling under his range, stating that the 'ban will cover the use of all loudspeakers and public address systems at public places.

Allahbad V.C. had written wrote a letter to District Magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami, citing that the morning prayers (Azan) from the nearby mosque in the Civil Lines area disturbs her sleep around 5.30 am every morning.

In her letter, the Allahabad Univeristy VC said that her sleep gets disturbed every morning and also results in a headache throughout the day.

Taking note of Srivastava's complaint, the mosque authorities changed the direction of the loudspeakers and turned down the volume of the public address system.

It may be noted that the Allahabad High Court in 2020 had noted that no religion advocates the use of loudspeaker for worship. While hearing a plea filed seeking strict compliance of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Abdul Moin had asked the Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government whether the loudspeakers or public address systems installed at religious places were installed after obtaining written permission from the authorities.

Notably, a controversy had erupted this week after the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf (waqf) restricted the mosques and dargahs from using loudspeakers between 10 pm to 6 am during namaz citing the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.

However, the order was withdrawn that called for restricting the mosques and dargahs authorities from using loudspeakers between 10 pm to 6 am during namaz.
