England announced their 14-man squad for the first Ashes Test series of 5 matches against Australia on Saturday. Joe Root will lead the hosts at Edgbaston in Birmingham starting August 1.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer, who shines with 20 goals in the winning English World Cup campaign, has been given the initial test call. Ben Stokes, who was removed as deputy captain after a commotion on the Bristol road in 2018, was reappointed as deputy Joe Root.

Pacer James Anderson, who missed the only Test against Ireland at Lord earlier this week because of an injury, was mentioned in the squad.

Bowler quickly failed to make an English record win over Ireland earlier this week because of pressure on the left but showed signs of form by taking 2 goals for Sussex on Friday at Vitality Blast. This meant he would be in a contest to get a place in the XI match with senior pro James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who took 9 goals at Lord's against Ireland.

England national voter Ed Smith explained that a lot of injuries to bowlers were the reason England chose a force of 14 players.

"Some bowlers recovered from injury or injury. In addition, some bowlers playing at the World Cup are being monitored to assess their preparations for the Test match cricket match. The situation is broader - a home World Cup campaign that was successfully followed so quickly by an Seri Seri home - unprecedented.

"It seems reasonable to choose an expanded squad and let a number of bowling options open."
