Army Day 2021: Know why this day is celebrated in India

India is celebrating its 73rd Army Day today. All Army Command headquarters celebrate Army Day to commemorate the country's soldiers. Here is all you need to know about this annual celebration.

Why is Army Day celebrated?

It marks the day when Lt Gen KM Carriappa took over as commander-in-chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher, the last British commander-in-chief of India, in 1949. It essentially marks the beginning of the Indian Army as we know it today. Apart from this day, it is also meant as a day to honour those soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for India.

Significance of January 15

It was on 15 January 1949 that the army got its first Indian chief.

How is Army Day celebrated?

Military parades are organized at various Army command headquarters. That parades showcase various aerial stunts, bike pyramids, and so on. The ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ at India Gate is where the country as a whole pays tribute to the army. Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi is the main venue for the parade. The bravery awards and Sena medals are also given on this day.

             

Why is Gen Cariappa important in the history of the Indian Army?

 Kodandera “Kipper” Madappa Carriappa took over from the British as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in independent India. He is one of the only two people who received the title of Field Marshal of India. He played an important role for the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.

A native of Karnataka, Gen Cariappa’s army career spanned over three decades. He won many accolades when he led the Eastern and Western Commands of the army.  He was one of the first Indians to receive training at the Imperial Defence College in Camberley, UK.

73rd Indian Army Day

To mark Army Day in 2021, the Indian Army has also organized a marathon – Vijay Run – to “commemorate Swarnim Vijay Varsh celebrations of India's resounding victory over Pakistan in 1971,” ADP-PI, Indian Army, tweeted.
